This standard delineates laboratory test methodologies and performance criteria for assessing key strength attributes of passenger car wheels. Additionally, the standard outlines failure criteria for the wheel tests.

According to IS 9436:2018, wheels for Passenger Cars, Quadricycles, and Mini Goods Carriers are categorized as per the GoL classification.

1. Based on Material of Wheel

• Ferrous

• Aluminium

2. Based on Category of Wheel

• Disc Wheel

• Wheel with demountable Rim

3. Based on Usage

• Normal Highway Service

• Temporary Use

For each Material and Wheel Rim Category, the wheels with the highest Load Rating for every Type of Usage must undergo testing to encompass the full spectrum of wheels for that material. Only fully processed new wheels, representative of those intended for vehicles, will be utilized for the tests, with each wheel dedicated to a single test.

TESTS

The subsequent test must be conducted for Wheels.

• Dynamic cornering fatigue test

• Dynamic radial fatigue test

A well-maintained laboratory is essential for conducting the various tests according to the methods outlined in the standard.

Wheels should display the manufacturer's name or trademark, along with the size designation. Any production meeting the Indian Standard and covered by the license must feature the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). To utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark), the Manufacturer must acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The BIS issues licenses following a successful evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes.
