It defines test conditions and procedures for different performance parameters of split air conditioners operating frost-free during cooling and dehumidification at standard rating conditions. Additionally, this standard pertains to split air conditioners capable of functioning as heaters via a heat pump or electric heater.

Comprising two components—an indoor unit and an outdoor unit—the system offers versatile installation options, including floor, wall, or ceiling mounting for the indoor unit. The indoor and outdoor units feature separate cabinets housing the compressor, heat exchangers, fan motors, and air handling system. Designed primarily to provide conditioned air to enclosed spaces, rooms, or zones, it functions as a primary cooling and dehumidification source, incorporating mechanisms for air movement and filtration. Manufacturers must guarantee that their product satisfies the standard's general, constructional, and performance criteria.

Split air conditioners are categorized based on their operational purpose and nominal cooling capacity.

The nominal cooling capacity of split air conditioners should be categorized as follows: 3000, 4500, 6000, 7500, and 9000 kcal/h.

The air conditioner and its components should be constructed with sufficient strength and durability to endure routine handling, transportation, and operational conditions. They should not feature any sharp edges or corners that may pose a risk of injury under typical usage scenarios, and all moving parts liable to cause accidents must be adequately safeguarded. Materials utilized in cabinet and front panel construction must adhere to relevant Indian Standards, unless specified otherwise by this standard. The manufacturer is responsible for ensuring both the structural integrity and performance of the air conditioner.

Labeling and marking procedures must adhere to IS 1391 (Part 2): 2018 guidelines. Complying with the stipulations of IS 1391 (Part 2): 2018, the product may receive certification under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and its relevant Regulations. This certification permits the product to be affixed with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). To utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark), manufacturers must acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. The issuance of a BIS license is contingent upon a successful evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control measures, testing capabilities, and the production process.
