Composite cement, a blend of multiple materials, offers a valuable means to create durable, high-strength concrete. IS: 16415-2015 addresses composite cement, detailing its manufacturing process and the necessary chemical and physical specifications.

Composite cement consists of top-grade clinker, fly ash, granulated slag, and gypsum. The usual composition comprises clinker (ranging from 35% to 65%), fly ash (between 15% to 35%), granulated slag (around 20% to 50%), and gypsum (approximately 3% to 5%).

Composite cement is manufactured by closely intergrinding Portland cement clinker, granulated slag, and fly ash, along with the necessary addition of gypsum. Alternatively, it can be created by thoroughly and evenly blending ordinary Portland cement, finely ground granulated slag, and fine fly ash, with the required addition of gypsum, resulting in a cement that meets the standards outlined in this specification.

Specialized concrete mixes tailored for unique purposes may incorporate composite cement with a fly ash component. Blended cement enables the production of concrete resistant to alkaline and sulfate corrosion. It is imperative that composite cement meets the chemical and physical specifications outlined in the standard.

A well-maintained laboratory is essential, where all tests are conducted according to the methods prescribed in the standard.

The manufacturer is responsible for proving that the cement meets the standards outlined in this specification. IS 16415:2015 lays down the requirements for marking and packaging. Each cement bag or drum must display the specified information as per the standard. Additionally, the cement may bear the ISI Certification mark. To utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark), the manufacturer must acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production processes.
