Key update regarding the Indian Standard applicable to current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers for the Footwear made from Leather and other Materials (Leather safety and protective footwear with direct moulded Polymeric sole) (Quality Control) Order, 2024.

OVERVIEW
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has released the "Quality Control Order, 2024," for footwear crafted from leather and other materials, set to be enforced starting August 1, 2024.
According to this directive, Leather safety and protective footwear featuring a direct moulded Polymeric sole must comply with Indian Standard IS 14544:2022, focusing on the Specification for such footwear. They are required to display the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
However, this regulation excludes items intended for export or products from micro and small manufacturing units as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006.
Furthermore, manufacturers certified by the BIS or those who have submitted their certification applications before the implementation of this directive can legally declare and sell their existing inventory of footwear products lacking the BIS Mark until June 30, 2025.
The Bureau of Indian Standards is authorized as the certifying and regulatory body for Protective Footwear.
