Ethylene glycol finds application in antifreeze formulations, explosives, organic intermediates, and the production of polyester fibers and filaments. Also known as 1,2 ethanediol or monoethylene glycol, it serves various industrial purposes.

The material shall be of two grades:

1. General grade

2. Fibre grade

The substance must be clear and devoid of suspended solids, exhibiting complete miscibility with water at any proportion at 20°C. Furthermore, it should conform to the standard's specifications when subjected to the designated testing method. Due to its hygroscopic nature, the material must be shielded from atmospheric humidity, as it has the capacity to absorb twice its weight in water vapor from the environment.

PACKING AND MARKING

Packing and labeling procedures must adhere to IS 5295:2021 guidelines. The substance should be securely packaged in a suitable container, ideally with a removable closure to ensure proper sealing. Each container must be accurately labeled with the required information as outlined in the standard.

The product's container should feature the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) only if the material meets all specified requirements. Manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control measures, testing capabilities, and production processes.
