IS 10617:2018 encompasses hermetic compressors. This standard pertains to sealed refrigeration and air-conditioning compressors utilizing reciprocating, rotary, and scroll pump mechanisms, operating on the vapor compression cycle. These compressors are suitable for applications spanning low, medium, and high temperatures.
The hermetic compressor's capacity must be assessed under the specified test conditions outlined in the standard. It should feature a built-in protection system, which can either be a bimetallic thermal overload protection (OLP) system or an electronically-controlled protection system. These OLPs may be internal or external to the compressor.

2) Routine Tests
Manufacturers must adhere to specified painting (including color and type) and packaging specifications. Additionally, the compressor must bear permanent and legible markings, as outlined in the standard, on a nameplate. This nameplate should be placed in a visible and accessible location.
IS 10617:2018 outlines labeling and marking criteria. If the product meets these standards, it can be certified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and its regulations, and marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers must secure a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the ISI Mark. This license is granted following an assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production processes.
