AIS, or Automotive Industry Standards, represent the technical standards for the automotive sector in India, aligned with UNECE guidelines. Introduced in 1989, AIS Certification is part of the India Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR). These rules govern various aspects related to vehicles, including traffic regulations, production, and maintenance, ensuring compliance and safety across the automotive industry in India.
Automotive Industry Standards (AIS) are issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the government body responsible for regulating the automotive sector in India. AIS certification aims to enhance traffic safety and improve transportation standards.
The following three authorities are responsible for granting AIS Certification:
International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT)
Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI)
Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA)
AIS standards are primarily introduced to address safety requirements, making them mandatory for various safety-related products and components of vehicles.
Following are the benefits of having an AIS Certification:
Enhanced Vehicle Performance Monitoring: AIS Certification supports effective vehicle performance monitoring. It provides manufacturers with relevant data, assisting operators in delivering timely maintenance and optimizing vehicle performance.
Increased Passenger Safety: The primary objective of AIS is to boost safety in commercial vehicles, ensuring safer journeys for all passengers.
Public Transportation Improvements: AIS Certification contributes to the enhancement of public transportation in India by facilitating route tracking and optimizing travel efficiency.
Driver Monitoring and Accountability: AIS Certification includes data on vehicle speed, duration, and other driving habits, enabling better tracking of drivers and improving accountability in cases of reckless or impaired driving.
AIS Certification applies to both mandatory and voluntary automotive products. Currently, 26 products are required to be certified under the Automotive Industry Standards (AIS), with some also needing BIS Certification. The following products are mandated to receive AIS Certification:
Brake hoses
Tyres
Horns
Carburettors
Rear view mirror
Lights, bulbs and replaceable LEDs
Speed limiting devices
For additional details, please refer to our comprehensive list of ais mandatory products that are currently subject to AIS approval.
When applying for AIS Certification, you will need to provide the following documents:
Control Plan (COP Plan)
English translation of the manufacturer’s commercial register extract
Quality Manual
Flowchart of production steps
Current ISO Certificates
List of raw materials used
Product drawings
Test reports for five key raw materials
List of machines used
In-house test reports for the products to be certified
List of test equipment used
Calibration reports for test equipment
Job descriptions for test personnel
Test plan or frequency schedule
Training plan for test personnel
Standard updating procedures
Customer feedback or complaint forms
Description of testing requirements
Procedural instructions for non-conforming parts
Temperature and humidity verification laboratory records
Relevant AIS forms
Other required documents
To obtain AIS Certification, follow these steps:
Application Filing: Submit an application to the relevant authority for AIS Certification.
Documentation Submission: Provide all required documents along with the application and pay the necessary fee to the appropriate authority.
Factory Inspection: The relevant authority and Indian auditors will conduct a factory inspection upon receiving your application.
Product Testing and Marking: Products will undergo testing as part of the AIS Certification process. Post-testing, products will be marked accordingly.
Certification Issuance: Once the factory inspection and product testing meet the required standards, the authority will issue AIS Certification to the applicant.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) provides extensive certification and homologation services for various automotive needs. ARAI is an authorized agency that conducts testing and certification for vehicles and engines used in both automotive and non-automotive applications.
TAC, or Type Approval Certificate, is issued to ensure that products comply with specific technical and safety standards.
COP stands for Conformity of Production. It involves certifying the quality assurance processes in manufacturing to ensure consistent product quality.
AIS Certification remains valid for two years from the date of issuance.
Product marking involves labeling a product with a type approval six-digit ID after it has successfully passed testing and certification.
Authorized bodies for AIS testing and certification include the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT).
ICAT, or the International Centre for Automotive Technology, is authorized by the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) under the Indian Government. It performs various tests required for AIS and BIS Certification.
