OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has released the "Potable Water Bottles (Quality Control) Order, 2024," scheduled to come into effect three months after its publication date.

However, Small Enterprises and Micro Enterprises are subject to different compliance timelines under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006. Small Enterprises must comply within six months, whereas Micro Enterprises have nine months to adhere to the order.

According to this order, Potable water bottles must conform to the standards specified in Indian Standard IS 17803:2022 for Potable Water Bottles (Copper, Stainless Steel, Aluminium). These bottles are required to display the Standard Mark obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, following Scheme-1 as outlined in Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations from 2018.

Exceptions to this order include domestically manufactured goods or articles intended for export or those produced by enterprises registered on the "Udyam Portal" of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, meeting specific financial criteria.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the authority responsible for certifying and enforcing standards for Potable water bottles.

Failure to comply with this order may lead to penalties under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
