After approval by the Structural and Metals Division Council, the Bureau of Indian Standards formally adopted this standard following the finalization of the draft by the Alloy Steels and Special Steels Sectional Committee.
This standard outlines the specifications for wrought stainless steels designed for cold heading applications, supplied in the form of wires, wire rods, or bars. It applies to stainless steels exhibiting ferritic, martensitic, or austenitic properties.
Material supply must adhere to relevant standards. The standard mandates steel to be ordered and delivered based on either chemical composition or both chemical composition and mechanical properties.
Unless stated otherwise in the order, the manufacturer has discretion over the processes used to produce the steel. The chemical composition must adhere to the standard's specifications. The material must be devoid of any potentially detrimental internal and surface defects. The mechanical properties of the steel must meet the requirements outlined in the standard.
PACKING AND MARKING
Steel bars should be appropriately bundled, with each bundle accompanied by a metal tag bearing the manufacturer's name or trademark, steel grade, cast number, or any other identifying mark. Additionally, the product may be marked with a standard mark (ISI Mark).
Manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize a standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, quality control, and testing capabilities conducted during an on-site visit to the manufacturing premises by the Bureau.
