Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – particular requirements for Fans are covered under IS 302:2017. This standard (Part 2-80) deals with the safety of electric fans for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for singlephase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.

This standard also applies to separate controls (regulators) supplied with fans.

Fans not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as fans intended for use in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.

As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account,

a) persons (including children) whose,

• 1. physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or

• 2. lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; and

b) children playing with the appliance.

IS 302:2017 outlines labeling and marking criteria. If the product meets these standards, it can be certified under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and its regulations, and marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers must secure a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the ISI Mark. This license is granted following an assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production processes.
