This standard outlines the specifications for steel wires intended for needles used in hand sewing and gramophones. The standard categorizes steel wire for needles based on chemical composition, wire size, and finish.

This standard encompasses the following categories of needles:

• Hand sewing Domestic and tailors, including embroidery and drawing

• Sail makers

• Glovers

• Saddlers

• Hardness

• Packers

• Upholsters

• Palm makers

• Tacking

• Gramophone needles

The wire must be cold drawn from steel produced using an open hearth, an electric duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination of these processes. All finished wires must be well and cleanly drawn to the specified dimensions. The surface of the wire must be clean, uniform, smooth, and free of harmful defects such as pit marks, pores, scratches, longitudinal and transverse cracks, and so on, which are detrimental to the end-use of the product.

TESTS

The subsequent test must be conducted for Cold Rolled Steel Strips.

PACKING AND MARKING

Packing and marking procedures must adhere to IS 9962:1981 standards. Each wire coil should be properly bound, secured, and lubricated before being wrapped in polythene and jute. Labels on each coil must include details such as wire size, lot number, finish, and the manufacturer's name or trademark, or any other mark specified by the purchaser. Additionally, the material may bear a standard mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the standard mark (ISI Mark), which is granted based on a comprehensive assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production processes conducted during an on-site visit to the manufacturing premises.
