Without the ISI Mark, condensed milk cannot be marketed, imported, or exported within the Indian consumer market. The ISI Mark is essential for ensuring compliance with quality standards and regulations in India.

The products must be made from fresh, whole, standardized, reconstituted, or recombined milk sourced from cow milk, buffalo milk, or a blend of both. Additionally, milk solids that are properly processed can also be used. The milk must be standardized to ensure the quality of the final products.

• All ingredients must be clean, high-quality, and safe for consumption. Ingredients should meet standard quality criteria, including color, flavor, and odor.

• Products should exhibit a color ranging from whitish to light brown. The flavor must be pleasant and clean, free from any rancid, fruity, moldy, tallowy, cooked, sour, sandy, or other undesirable odors and tastes. Sensory evaluation is used to assess these characteristics.

• Sugar used in the production of condensed milk, whether full-cream or skimmed, must meet IS: 1679-1960 standards or be of equivalent food-grade quality.

• Products may be enriched with vitamins A, D, and B groups. These vitamins must be food-grade, and fortification levels should be clearly declared on the packaging.

• Despite fortification, condensed milk is not recommended as the sole food source for infants.

• Manufacturing and packaging should occur under hygienic conditions in licensed facilities whenever possible.

PACKING AND MARKING:

The material must be properly packed and labeled according to IS 1166 regulations. Condensed milk, including partly skimmed and skimmed varieties, should be packaged in securely sealed, clean, and intact containers. Additionally, the product may display the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) for condensed milk. This license is issued upon compliance with all relevant requirements of IS 1166.
