The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced a new standard for Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems for Electrical Installations: Cable Trunking and Ducting Systems Intended for Mounting on Walls or Ceiling. These systems play a crucial role in accommodating and segregating conductors, cables, or cords alongside other electrical equipment as necessary. They offer flexible installation options, being capable of direct attachment to walls or ceilings, either flush, semi-flush, or indirectly mounted. BIS certification is obligatory for these systems, as specified in the BIS IS standard: IS 14927 (Part 2): 2001.
Cable trunking and ducting systems are vital components in electrical installations, serving as structured and safeguarded pathways for cable and component management. Trunking commonly utilizes enclosed channels constructed from materials like PVC or metal to shield and conceal cables, thereby decreasing the risk of damage and mitigating electrical hazards. Similarly, ducting systems comprise organized networks of channels or trays that guide and protect wires across different infrastructures.
Crafted to oversee, safeguard, and direct electrical cables, these systems offer methodical approaches for routing and safeguarding wires across diverse environments. Be it residential, commercial, or industrial settings, they enhance safety, productivity, and orderliness. Their adaptability facilitates secure installation on walls and ceilings, adjusting to unique environmental needs.

Scope as per Standard | This standard (Part 2) outlines requirements for cable trunking and ducting systems designated for installation on walls or ceilings. These systems accommodate and, when necessary, segregate conductors, cables, or cords alongside other electrical equipment. They are designed for direct mounting on walls or ceilings, either flush or semi-flush, or indirectly on walls or ceilings, or on structures separate from walls or ceilings. Hereinafter, these systems are referred to as CT/DS. This standard does not encompass conduits, cable trays, or cable ladders, nor does it cover electrical accessories such as switches or socket-outlets, which are subject to separate Indian Standards. Additionally, it does not pertain to current carrying parts within the system. |

Under the ISI certification scheme, all cable trunking and ducting systems meant for electrical installation on walls or ceilings are included, as per IS 14927 (Part 2):2001. This standard outlines the requirements for such systems, excluding conduits, cable trays, cable ladders, or electrical items like switches and socket outlets. Distinct Indian standards are applicable to these items, encompassing any components that carry current within the system.
It's important to highlight that cable trunking and ducting systems intended for wall or ceiling mounting cannot be exported, imported, or sold in the Indian consumer market without the ISI Mark.
Acquiring a BIS license entails a detailed evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control capabilities, testing facilities, and production processes. This thorough assessment guarantees that the products not only meet regulatory standards but also ensure safety and reliability for consumers.
