BIS Certification for General Purpose Chairs and Stools under IS 17632:2022 is a regulatory compliance requirement established by the Bureau of Indian Standards that ensures general-use indoor chairs and stools meet defined safety, stability, strength, and durability benchmarks. This certification confirms that products have passed technical testing and assessment under Indian standards before being offered for sale, giving buyers assurance of quality and performance.
Yes, BIS certification for general purpose chairs and stools has become mandatory in India under the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025. From 13 February 2026, all such chairs and stools must comply with IS 17632:2022 and carry the BIS Standard Mark (ISI mark) to be legally manufactured, imported, distributed, or sold within the country.
Indian Standard IS 17632:2022 applies to general-purpose chairs and stools designed for everyday indoor use across homes, institutions, hospitality spaces, schools, offices, and commercial environments. It defines performance requirements for structural stability, strength, surface safety, and durability, but does not apply to specialized seating such as reclining chairs or work chairs covered under other standards.
Any manufacturer, importer, distributor, brand owner, or seller planning to offer general purpose chairs and stools in the Indian market must obtain BIS certification for those products. This applies equally to domestic producers and foreign suppliers targeting sales within India. Products without a valid BIS licence and the ISI mark cannot be legally sold or distributed after the enforcement deadline.
The government notified the Furniture Quality Control Order, 2025 on 13 February 2025, and mandatory enforcement for furniture products including general purpose chairs and stools came into effect from 13 February 2026. From that date onwards, non-certified products cannot be legally marketed, imported, or sold in India.
