In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 4431:1978 for Carbon and Carbon manganese free-cutting steels.
This standard outlines the specifications for wrought carbon and carbon-manganese free-cutting steels, which are provided in the form of blooms, billets, and bars. The general requirements for the supply of these steels are detailed in IS 1387:1967.
Unless specified otherwise in the order, the manufacturing process for the steel and the final product is at the discretion of the manufacturer. However, the steel must be either semi-killed or killed. It is essential for the material to be devoid of any internal or surface imperfections. Both the purchaser and the manufacturer must agree mutually on the method for assessing internal defects during the inquiry and ordering process.
The ladle analysis of steels must adhere to the stipulated criteria outlined in the standard. Regardless of whether the steel is hot rolled, normalized, cold drawn, or subjected to hardening and tempering, it must satisfy the mechanical properties outlined in the standard. The dimensional tolerances for rolled steel products must align with either grade 1 or grade 2 as per IS 3739:1972.
The subsequent test must be conducted for Carbon & Carbon Mangnese.

Each bar, billet, or forging should bear a cast number or identification mark for traceability purposes. Additionally, the standard mark (ISI Mark) may be affixed to the product. Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark, with licensing contingent upon a satisfactory evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities conducted during a site visit.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
