This standard outlines the criteria for malleable iron shot and grit intended for use as abrasives in shot blasting machines within foundries.
Malleable iron shot is classified based on the shot number, denoting the aperture size of the retaining screen in thousandths of millimeters, labeled as S-M. Malleable iron grit is graded by the grit number, representing the aperture size of the retaining screen in hundredths of millimeters, identified as G-M.
By employing a suitable heat treatment process, malleable iron shot and grit are manufactured through the malleabilization of white iron shot and grit. It's imperative that the particle shape and size conform to standard specifications. Upon testing as per the specified method, the material must exhibit the chemical composition outlined in the standard. The average hardness of the particles should fall within the range of 200 to 300 HV. Additionally, malleable iron shot and grit must possess a microstructure characterized by tempered carbon nodules within a matrix predominantly comprising pearlitic or tempered martensitic phases.
