This standard pertains to cold-reduced and hot-rolled carbon steel sheets categorized under commercial and drawing qualities, specifically for porcelain enamelling applications. The surface of the sheet and the chemistry of the base metal are of paramount importance in this context.
Hot rolled or cold reduced carbon steel sheets shall be categorized into three grades, namely: Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C.
Steel for these sheets shall be sourced from processes such as open hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen, or a combination thereof. Depending on mutual agreement, hot-rolled sheets may be provided in various conditions like rolled, annealed, pickled, and oiled, ensuring freedom from detrimental defects.
The completed sheets must be devoid of detrimental defects such as scale, rust, blisters, laminations, pitting, cracked edges, and other imperfections. Compliance with the standard's general requisites for the supply of hot rolled and cold reduced carbon steel sheets is mandatory. Testing procedures outlined in the standard shall be followed, ensuring adherence to the stipulated requirements.

PACKING AND MARKING
Packaging and labeling must adhere to IS 9485:1980 standards. Each bundle or package of sheets must be clearly marked with the required information as outlined in the standard. Additionally, the material may bear the standard mark (ISI Mark).
To utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark), manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities during an onsite visit to the manufacturing premises.
