BIS CRS Certification, or Compulsory Registration Scheme Certification, mandates that manufacturers obtain a BIS CRS Registration Certificate for their electronic products before they can be marketed. This certification ensures that products adhere to specific standards, with manufacturers declaring compliance.
Introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the scheme follows Scheme – II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. It applies specifically to electronic and IT products under the Compulsory Registration order of 2021. For products within the Compulsory Registration Scheme, understanding the BIS certification process is essential in India
Register on the BIS Portal: To begin the BIS CRS registration process, manufacturers or their authorized representatives in India must first register on the BIS portal. This step is essential for submitting an online application for the BIS CRS Registration Certificate.
Request Product Testing from a BIS-Approved Lab: After registering on the BIS portal, manufacturers need to request testing from a BIS-approved laboratory. It is crucial to select a lab that is authorized by BIS for the specific product category related to the CRS Registration Certificate.
Submit a Sample for Testing: Once testing is requested, the applicant will receive a QR Code. This code must be attached to the product sample or packet sent to the chosen lab. The sample and testing request must reach the lab within 60 days of generating the request. The lab will acknowledge receipt via email.
Complete the Online Application for BIS CRS Certification: After passing the testing phase, applicants need to complete an online application using Form I to obtain the BIS CRS Certificate. All required documents, including the test report (not older than 90 days), should be uploaded. Following payment of the necessary fees, an acknowledgment will be sent via email.
Submit Paper Copies :Manufacturers must also send hard copies of the application form and supporting documents to the BIS office within 15 days of the online submission. This includes test reports, product specifications, and other relevant paperwork. Failure to submit these within the specified timeframe may result in application closure.
Review of BIS CRS Registration Application: Upon receiving the hard copies, BIS authorities will review the application to ensure completeness and compliance with required standards. Any queries from BIS must be addressed online. Failure to respond in a timely manner may delay the issuance of the BIS CRS Registration Certificate.
Receive the Certificate: If the application meets all requirements and the product complies with standards, BIS will issue the CRS License. This certification allows manufacturers to use the BIS mark on their products for sale in the Indian market.
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) applies to various products listed in the BIS mandatory list. For detailed information about the registration process, refer to the Compulsory Registration Scheme PDF.
To apply for a BIS CRS Registration Certificate under the Compulsory Registration Scheme, manufacturers must submit the following essential documents:
Photo ID of the Responsible Person
Address ID of the Responsible Person
Business Registration Details (Partnership/MSME/Company, etc.)
PAN Card of the Business Entity
GST Registration
Memorandum of Association (MoA) & Articles of Association (AoA)
Brand Name Registration
Brand Authorization
Application Form I
Undertaking as per Form II
Third-Party Laboratory Test Report
Affidavit as per Form III
These documents are crucial for completing your BIS CRS Registration application successfully.
Builds Consumer Trust: The BIS certification mark signifies adherence to specific Indian Standards, indicating high quality. This assurance helps customers easily identify reliable products, as BIS-certified items are known for their performance and durability.
Boosts Sales: Products with BIS certification are more attractive to consumers. The certification marks these products as compliant with national standards, making them preferable and increasing consumer demand.
Enhances Brand Value: BIS certification serves as proof that a product meets stringent standards for manufacturing and material quality. This certification reflects ongoing improvements and environmental considerations, highlighting the product’s eco-friendliness and distinguishing it from competitors.
Reduces Costs: With BIS CRS certification, manufacturers can streamline quality control processes, reducing additional costs associated with maintaining separate quality standards.
Ensures High Quality: A BIS registration number guarantees that the product is of superior quality, meeting established standards.
Facilitates Business Growth: BIS certification opens doors for exporting products from India to international markets. It enhances the product’s reputation globally, boosting trust and helping your business expand its reach.
Manufacturers must adhere to Indian Standards and obtain a Standard Mark with a Registration Number from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to manufacture, store, import, or sell products in India.
The Compulsory Registration Scheme in India encompasses a broad range of products. The BIS Mandatory List identifies items subject to this scheme. Understanding the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme is crucial for businesses handling these products. BIS Scheme 1 and BIS Scheme 2 detail different aspects of this registration process. Companies often seek BIS registration under the CRS of MeitY as part of the Compulsory Registration Scheme.
Securing BIS registration for Electronics and IT products under the Compulsory Registration Scheme is mandatory before their market launch. Manufacturers must obtain BIS registration for their electronic products to use the BIS Standard Mark with R-number.
