This Indian Standard (Part 2) delineates the criteria for steel tape measures, employed in situations where rigid length measurements are impractical or inconvenient. Steel tape measures should be manufactured in nominal lengths of 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m, or 5m, or in integral multiples of 5m, with a maximum nominal length of 200m.

In typical usage scenarios, the length measure and accompanying tools should be crafted from suitable steel or stainless steel, ensuring durability, stability, and resilience to environmental factors. These devices must be meticulously manufactured and refined. When laid flat on a surface, the edges of the steel tape measure should be nearly straight and parallel, with a slight rounding. The construction of Steel Tape measures must align with the specifications outlined in relevant Indian standards.

MARKING

Labeling and marking procedures must adhere to IS 1269 (Part 2) 1997. All products meeting the Indian Standard and covered by the BIS license must display the standard ISI mark. A BIS license for Steel Tape Measures of Length allows the use of the standard mark as per IS 1269 (Part 2) 1997. Each tape measure must be clearly and permanently marked with its nominal length in meters, the zero point of the scale, the manufacturer's name or trademark, and an accuracy class designation.

In order to utilize a standard mark, manufacturers must initially obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards for Steel Tape Measures. The Bureau grants BIS licenses to products that comply with applicable Indian standards. BIS certification empowers manufacturers to build consumer confidence and sustain the export and sale of their products in India.
