The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the 2023 Legal Metrology - Material Measures of Length (Steel tape measures) (Quality Control) Directive.

It will take effect six months after being published in the Official Gazette. This order applies to items within the scope of Legal Metrology, particularly material measures of length.

To meet quality standards, these measures must conform to Indian Standard 1269 (Part 2):1997 and display the Standard Mark, issued under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This order excludes domestically manufactured goods meant for export.

The order's effective date differs based on the type of enterprises involved:

• For micro-enterprises defined under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, it becomes effective twelve months from the date of notification.

• For small enterprises as defined under the same act, it takes effect nine months from the date of notification.
