The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced the "Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2024," a new regulation aimed at ensuring quality standards for hinges.

This order will be effective starting January 1, 2025.

Under this order, all hinges must comply with Indian Standard 12817:2020 (Stainless Steel Butt Hinges) and display the Standard Mark. This compliance necessitates obtaining a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

This order specifically excludes goods or articles manufactured domestically for export.

Additionally, the enforcement timeline for this order varies based on enterprise classification. Small and micro enterprises, as defined by the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), will need to comply with these Indian Standards by their respective deadlines.

Implementation Dates:

For General Enterprises (excluding Micro and Small Enterprises), compliance is required by January 1, 2025. Small Enterprises must adhere to the standards by April 1, 2025, while Micro Enterprises have until July 1, 2025, to comply.
