The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India's National Standard Body, established under the BIS Act of 2016. Its mission is to promote the standardization, marking, and quality certification of consumer goods. As part of the Compulsory Registration Scheme, certain products must bear the BIS Standard Safety mark before they can be manufactured, imported, or sold in India. This includes 63 categories of Electronics and IT Goods, 5 types of Solar Photovoltaics, Systems, Devices, and Components (as notified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), and 8 types of Low-Voltage Switchgear and Control Gear (as notified by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises). Compliance with these standards is mandatory as per the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's regulations. For BIS registration in India, it is essential to adhere to these requirements to ensure your products meet the necessary safety and quality standards.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Certification is awarded by the BIS office following successful safety testing of the product according to the relevant Indian Standards and the submission of necessary documentation.

However,BIS certification for imports importers and traders can facilitate the BIS certification process for their intended products by applying on behalf of their associated manufacturing units. This is required before placing orders for electronic products that fall under the BIS Compulsory Certification Scheme. Importers and traders may also act as the Indian representative for foreign manufacturing units and assist in obtaining the BIS license.
Alternatively, traders or importers can request their manufacturing units to secure the BIS Certification under their own brand name. For more information on how to proceed, please click here.

BIS registration in India is a mandatory certification process governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards under the BIS Act, 2016. It ensures that products meet specific safety, quality, and performance standards before they are manufactured, imported, or sold in the Indian market. This certification is especially important for electronics, IT goods, solar products, and low-voltage equipment under various government regulations.
BIS registration is required for manufacturers of products that fall under mandatory certification categories notified by government authorities such as MeitY, MNRE, and MHIPE. Both Indian and foreign manufacturers must obtain BIS certification before selling their products in India. Importers and traders cannot obtain BIS certification in their own name but can facilitate the process for manufacturers.
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a regulatory framework introduced by the Government of India to ensure that specific electronic and IT products meet Indian safety standards. Under this scheme, products must be tested in BIS-recognized laboratories and registered with BIS before being sold in the Indian market.
To obtain a BIS registration certificate, manufacturers must first get their product tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory according to applicable Indian Standards. After testing, they must submit an online application along with required documents and fees. Once BIS verifies the application and test reports, the registration certificate is granted.
BIS registration fees typically include an application fee, processing fee, and registration fee. For most electronic and IT products, the total cost is approximately ₹53,000 for a new application or renewal, while inclusion of additional models costs around ₹30,000. However, fees may vary depending on the product category and specific requirements.
