Dear Reader,
We have crucial announcement concerning the Indian Standard for the Steel and Steel Products (Steel plates for pressure vessels for intermediate and high temperature service including boilers) (Quality Control) Order, 2024 impacting all current license holders, new applicants, manufacturers, importers, and product sellers.
The Ministry of Steel has issued the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, under the authority granted by sections 16, 17, and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016). This Order replaces the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2020, and takes effect upon its publication in the Official Gazette, with exceptions for ongoing matters.
This Order pertains to steel and steel products, specifically focusing on Steel Plates intended for Pressure Vessels used in Intermediate and High Temperature Service, including boilers. Domestically manufactured steel and steel products meeting alternative specifications required by foreign buyers for export are exempted under this Order.
Each steel and steel product specified in this Order must comply with Indian Standards IS 2002: 2009 immediately upon implementation. They must also be accompanied by a Test Certificate bearing the Standard Mark, issued by a manufacturer certified under the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Moreover, products meeting these specifications must display the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
The Bureau of Indian Standards is appointed as the authority responsible for certifying and enforcing compliance with this Order.
Failure to comply with any provision of this Order may result in penalties under section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).

In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 2002: 2009 For Steel Plates For Pressure Vessels For Intermediate And High Temperature Service Including Boilers.
Steel plates for pressure vessels, designed for intermediate and high-temperature service, are crucial in industries needing materials that endure extreme conditions. Ideal for constructing boilers, reactors, and heat exchangers, these plates withstand high pressures and temperatures. Their strength and durability ensure safe and efficient operation, preventing equipment failure and extending lifespan. Essential for power plants, chemical plants, and oil refineries, they maintain structural integrity under harsh conditions, crucial for industrial safety and reliability.
Under the latest Quality Control Order (QCO) from the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, dated 5th February 2024, steel plates for pressure vessels, including those for intermediate and high-temperature service, must conform to Indian Standard IS 2002:2009. This standard ensures that the plates meet critical quality and safety criteria, such as tensile strength, durability, and resistance to high temperatures and pressures. Compliance with IS 2002:2009 guarantees precise manufacturing specifications, ensuring reliability and performance in critical applications. Adhering to this standard is essential for manufacturers to meet regulatory requirements, maintain product consistency, and build consumer trust in construction material quality and safety.
