Its mission is to promote the standardization, marking, and quality certification of consumer goods. As part of the Compulsory Registration Scheme, certain products must bear the BIS Standard Safety mark before they can be manufactured, imported, or sold in India. This includes 63 categories of Electronics and IT Goods, 5 types of Solar Photovoltaics, Systems, Devices, and Components (as notified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy), and 8 types of Low-Voltage Switchgear and Control Gear (as notified by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises). Compliance with these standards is mandatory as per the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's regulations. How to Obtain a BIS Registration Certificate in India

Guidelines for BIS Certification for Importers and Traders
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues BIS Certificates exclusively to manufacturing units (the manufacturing applicants). Importers and traders are not eligible to receive BIS Certification in their own name.
However,BIS certification for imports importers and traders can facilitate the BIS certification process for their intended products by applying on behalf of their associated manufacturing units. This is required before placing orders for electronic products that fall under the BIS Compulsory Certification Scheme. Importers and traders may also act as the Indian representative for foreign manufacturing units and assist in obtaining the BIS license.
