OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Steel has issued the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, utilizing authority granted by sections 16, 17, and sub-section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016). This Order replaces the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2020, and becomes effective upon its publication in the Official Gazette, except for previously handled matters.

Under this Order, which applies to steel and steel products, particularly Cold Rolled Steel Strips (Box Strappings), domestically produced steel and related products meeting alternative specifications mandated by international buyers for export are exempted.

Every steel and steel product outlined in this Order must comply with Indian Standards 5872: 1990 upon implementation. Additionally, it must be accompanied by a Test Certificate featuring the Standard Mark issued by a manufacturer certified under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Moreover, products meeting the specifications must display the Standard Mark under a license issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme – I of Schedule – II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is appointed as the authority responsible for certifying and enforcing compliance with this Order.

Failure to comply with any provision of this Order is subject to penalties under section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).

Any changes or updates made by the Bureau of Indian Standards to the specified Indian Standards shall apply to this Order from the date of their publication by the Bureau.
