In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Lets delve deeper into IS 2593: 1984 for flexible cables.
IS 2593:1984 governs flexible cables designated for miners' cap-lamps, delineating their essential requirements. Miners' cap-lamps are comprised of multiple elements, including a battery shielded in a protective casing, a cable, and a headpiece containing the light source. The focus of this standard is specifically on the cables that connect the headpiece to the battery.
The conductor must be crafted from tinned copper and must conform to the specifications of IS: 8130-1984 Class 5, with the exception outlined below.
When subjecting sample wires to persulphate testing, the copper's mass dissolved during conduction should not surpass 7.5 g/m2.
The resistance of each core's conductor, adjusted to 20°C, must not exceed 3.4 ohms per 100 meters of the final cable length.
The conductor's nominal cross-sectional area should be one mm2, following the formation standards outlined in IS: 8130-1984 Flexibility Class 5. The insulation material must be general service elastomeric, adhering to the specifications of IS: 6380-1984 Type IE 1.
The center cord should have a minimum diameter of 1.8 mm and must adhere to the specifications stated in the standard. The sheath material must be an elastomeric compound that satisfies the criteria of IS: 6380-1984 Type SE3, also meeting the standard's requirements. The cable's overall diameter should be 9.0 mm, with a tolerance of 0.25 mm.
The subsequent test must be conducted for Flexible Cables.
1. Type Tests: Type tests shall include the following:
Persulphate test
Annealing test
Conductor resistance test
Test for the thickness of insulation and sheath
Physical tests for insulation and sheath
Tests for centre strain cord
Voltage test
Checking of the overall diameter of the cable
Flammability test
Resistance of sheath to fatty acids
2. Acceptance Tests: Acceptance tests shall include the following
Persulphate test
Annealing test
Conductor resistance test
Test for the thickness of insulation and sheath
Test for breaking load of centre strain cord
Voltage test
Checking of the overall diameter
3. Routine Tests: Routine tests shall include the following
Conductor resistance test
Voltage test
The manufacturer's identity must be clearly displayed along the entire length of the cable, either through a tape bearing the manufacturer's name or trademark, or by printing, indenting, or embossing the manufacturer's name on the outer sheath. The cable should be packaged on reels, drums, or in coils. All required information specified in the standard must be stenciled on the reel or drum, or included on a label attached to it. Optionally, the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may be applied to the cable. To use the standard mark, the manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, which is granted after a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
