IS 11356: 2020 now includes guidelines for styrene-butadiene rubber latex. This adoption by the Bureau of Indian Standards follows approval by the Petroleum, Coal, and Related Products Division Council and the finalization of the draft by the Rubber and Rubber Products Sectional Committee. Styrene-butadiene latex finds application in various industries including tyre cord dipping, adhesive compounding for footwear and paper, carpet backings, upholstery, and linings for proofed goods like firefighting hoses.

This standard outlines the criteria, sampling procedures, and testing methodologies for styrene-butadiene rubber latex. It pertains specifically to non-staining hot polymerized styrene butadiene type copolymer latex emulsified with rosin acid soap emulsifier. Compliance with the specifications outlined in this standard is mandatory. Testing procedures detailed in the standard should be conducted in a suitably equipped and staffed laboratory.

Packaging and labeling procedures must adhere to the guidelines specified in IS 11356:2020. Styrene-butadiene latex should be packaged either in epoxy coated mild steel drums or in alternative containers, subject to mutual agreement between the buyer and the seller. Each container must display the manufacturer's name or trademark, the net and gross weight in kilograms, and the packing date (month and year).

In accordance with this standard, products can qualify for certification under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, along with its associated Rules and Regulations. Such certified products may bear the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted subsequent to a thorough evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes.
