In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Lets delve deeper into IS 15644: 2006 safety of electric toys.
This standard focuses on the safety of toys with at least one electrical function. It covers a range of toys such as constructional sets, experimental sets, functional toys, and video games. The standard is applicable to toys utilizing electricity for secondary functions. Its goal is to minimize potential risks associated with toy usage, especially those that may not be immediately apparent to users.
As per the input source, electric toys are divided into the following sub-groups:
Battery operated toys
Transformer toys
Dual-supply toys
Toys should be designed to minimize risks to individuals and the environment during intended use or foreseeable scenarios. Generally, this is achieved by adhering to the applicable requirements outlined in the standard, with compliance confirmed through relevant testing procedures.
Toys should maintain low temperatures during use, and their electrical insulation must be sufficient for both operational and ambient conditions. The voltage supply should not surpass 24 V, and all components must adhere to the safety standards outlined in the relevant IEC standard.
As per this standard, tests are classified as type tests. Here are some of the testing guidelines:
The tests are conducted on a single sample, which must successfully pass all relevant assessments.
Testing is carried out with the toy or any movable part positioned in the most unfavorable configuration as intended for use.
Toys featuring controls or switching devices are tested using these mechanisms.
Battery-operated toys are assessed alongside their battery box, while transformer toys are tested with the accompanying transformer.
If alternative accessories are provided, the toy is tested with those accessories.
The subsequent test must be conducted for electric toys.
Tests for the safety of electric toys heating and abnormal operation test
Electrical strength at operating temperature
Moisture resistance
Electric strength at room temperature
Mechanical strength
Resistance to heat and fire
Protection of cords and wires
Radiation, toxicity
Toys or their packaging must bear the name, trademark, model, or type. The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) must be clearly and permanently displayed on the primary packaging or on the toy itself, provided that the marked material meets the specification requirements. Packaging, marking, labeling, including warnings, and other required instructions and information (for assembly, maintenance, etc.) must comply with the Indian Standard. Manufacturers need to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted following a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes during an inspection of the manufacturing premises.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
