In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 9968 (Pt 1): 1988 for Elastomer insulated cables for working voltages up to and including 1100 V.
IS 9968 (PART 1): 1988 addresses Elastomer insulated cables designed for operational voltages up to and including 1100 V. The Bureau of Indian Standards officially adopted this Indian Standard (Part 1) (First Revision) on August 25, 1988, subsequent to the finalization of the draft by the Power Cables sectional Committee and its approval by the Electrotechnical Division Council. This standard delineates the criteria for elastomeric insulated cables intended for fixed wiring, flexible cables, and flexible cords for electric power and lighting applications with voltages up to and including 1100 volts.
This standard is applicable to the subsequent types of cables and cords.
1) Cables for fixed wiring
Braided and compounded/varnished
Elastomer sheathed
Elastomer sheathed (normal duty) with earth continuity conductor
2) Flexible cables
Braided and varnished
Elastomer sheathed (heavy-duty)
3) Flexible cords
Braided
Elastomer sheathed (normal duty)
Flexible cords of the unkinkable variety, featuring braiding and compounding (commonly known as workshop type).
Unkinkable flexible cords – braided and compounded
This standard encompasses cables suitable for application in single-phase or three-phase systems, whether earthed or unearthed, with rated voltages up to and including 1100 volts.
The conductor must consist of annealed copper wires or aluminum wires meeting the standard's specifications. Optionally, a separator tape made of appropriate material may be applied over the conductor. The insulation should be composed of an elastomer compound. Additionally, the product must fulfill the specifications detailed in the standard.
The following tests must be conducted for ELASTOMER INSULATED CABLES
Tensile test (for Aluminium)
Wrapping test (for Aluminium)
Conductor Resistance Test
Test for the thickness of insulation and sheath and overall diameter
Physical test for insulation and sheath (Tensile and elongation at break)
Insulation resistance
Flammability Test
The company must declare the cable varieties and sizes they intend to include in the license. The manufacturer's name or trademark should be prominently displayed along the cable length via a tape or printed, indented, or embossed on the outer sheath. Cables must be packaged on reels, drums, or coils, with requisite information marked on them as per the standard. The ISI Mark can also be applied to the cable. Manufacturers need to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the ISI Mark. This license is granted after a thorough assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production processes.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
