In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 15757:2007 for follow up formula-complementary foods.
This standard delineates the requisites, testing methodologies, and sampling protocols for complementary foods meant for infants transitioning to solid foods after six months of age up to two years.
A product produced through the spray drying process of cow or buffalo milk, or a blend thereof, qualifies as a follow-up formula-complementary food. From six months to two years of age, this follow-up formula serves as a liquid supplement for an infant's complementary diet. It can be administered directly or diluted with water before feeding when in liquid state. In powdered form, water is necessary for preparation, ensuring it remains free of lumps and maintains a consistent appearance.
Follow-up formula-complementary food should be devoid of starch, added colors, or flavors. It must maintain cleanliness and be devoid of any dirt, foreign particles, or scorched residues. Additionally, it must be free from any substances hazardous to human health. The nutrients outlined in the standard must be present in the follow-up formula.
If required, the product may include additional nutrients to ensure its suitability for mixed feeding after six months of age. When incorporating any nutrients, the food must contain at least the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) amounts for that nutrient.
All utilized ingredients must meet stringent standards for cleanliness, quality, safety, and suitability for infant consumption. The manufacturing and packaging processes must adhere to strict hygiene standards. The product is required to fulfill the specifications outlined in the standard.
The following tests must be conducted for formula-complementary foods.
Description
Flavour, Taste and Odour
Scorched Particles
Moisture
Total ash
Total Fat
Total Milk Protein
Acid insoluble ash
Packing and labeling procedures must adhere to IS 15757: 2007 guidelines. Follow-up formula-complementary food should be packed in securely sealed, clean, and intact metal containers or flexible packs to prevent spoilage. These containers should clearly display the required information as outlined in the standard. Additionally, the product may feature the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) and the ECO-Mark, both obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
