This standard outlines the specifications for mild steel wire rods intended for the production of wires meeting the standards set forth in IS 1673:1973. These wires are commonly utilized in the manufacturing of machine screws or threaded fasteners.

The general provisions for material supply must adhere to the specifications outlined in IS 1387:1967. Steel utilized for wire rods production should be manufactured through processes such as open hearth, electric furnace, basic oxygen, or a combination thereof. In cases where the basic oxygen process is employed, the nitrogen content should not surpass 0.007 percent. Steel can be supplied in semi-killed, killed, or rimming conditions, based on the requirements specified during inquiry and ordering processes.

Wire rods should be available in straight lengths or coils and delivered in a rolled or annealed state, meeting the size specifications agreed upon by the purchaser. The end product must be free from surface defects and internal flaws that might affect its functionality.

PACKING AND MARKING:

Packing and marking procedures must adhere to IS 2255:1977. Each coil or bundle of wire should be securely bound or fastened. It should be marked with details including the wire rod size, coil or bundle mass, manufacturing date, and the manufacturer's trademark or name. Additionally, the standard mark (ISI Mark) may be affixed to the material.

To utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark), manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted subsequent to a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities conducted during an inspection at the manufacturing premises by the Bureau.
