This standard outlines the specifications for four variations of high carbon chromium steel utilized in billets, bars, wire rods, wire, and rings for general applications in producing ball and roller bearings.

The steel should undergo production through an electric furnace process, ensuring it's fully killed and vacuum degassed, or employing another process meeting the required quality standards. Each ingot must undergo adequate reduction and discard to guarantee freedom from piping, segregation, and other defects. Material conditioning may be performed during reduction to the finished size, utilizing methods such as chipping, machining, or grinding to eliminate surface defects. IS 8910:1978 outlines the general material supply prerequisites.

MARKING

Marking procedures adhere to IS 4398:1994 standards. Each bar, billet, wire, and wire rod requires identification with a cast number or any other distinguishable mark enabling traceability to its originating cast. Optionally, a standard mark (ISI Mark) can be applied, contingent upon obtaining a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted following a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, quality control, and testing capabilities conducted during a visit to the manufacturing premises.
