This standard outlines the criteria for deep drawing cold-rolled carbon steel strips utilized in the production of cages/retainers for ball and roller bearings. The strips must be provided solely in the skin-rolled temper, without scalloping, and must be conducive to blanking, deep drawing, and piercing processes.

Strips are categorized into the following grades:

• DD: Deep drawing quality

• EDD: Extra deep drawing quality

Steel production must utilize an open hearth, an electric basic oxygen process, or a combination of these methods. Consultation with the purchaser is necessary if any other process is employed in manufacturing. Steel should be fully killed. Specifically, EDD grade steel must be provided exclusively in fully aluminum killed or fully stabilized form, utilizing micro alloying elements like Nb, V, Ti, and B. The final strip should possess a clean, bright, and smooth surface, devoid of detrimental defects such as laps, seams, lamination scales, rust, blisters, pitting, discoloration, cracked edges, etc. IS 8910 delineates the overarching prerequisites for providing cold-rolled carbon steel strips.

TESTS

The subsequent test must be conducted for Cold Rolled Carbon Steel Strips.

• Chemical composition

• Freedom from defects

• Bend test

• Hardness test

• Cupping test

MARKING

Packing and marking procedures must adhere to IS 4397:1999 standards. The purchaser and manufacturer must mutually agree on the packing method and rust prevention measures during transit. Each package of strips must display the manufacturer's name or trademark, along with the cast number, size, and mass.

To utilize a standard mark (ISI Mark), manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is granted following a thorough assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, quality control, and testing capabilities conducted during a visit to the manufacturing premises by the Bureau.
