In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 9550:2001 for bright steel bars.
This standard pertains to cold drawn, turned, turned and reeled, or ground steel bars, encompassing grades and cross-sections typically deemed appropriate for heat treatment, machining into components, or utilization in 'as finished' state for constructional applications or similar purposes. These purposes may include the production of threaded and machined components for general engineering applications.
The general requirements for material supply must comply with the specifications outlined in IS 8910. Steel products should be supplied in one or more of the following finishing conditions: a) drawn, b) turned, c) ground, or d) turned and reeled. The methods employed in the manufacturing of steel and bright steel products are at the discretion of the manufacturer. Material specifications and any required heat treatment should be selected to ensure that the rolled bars used for producing bright bars possess the desired mechanical properties as stipulated by the purchaser.
When supplying bars, sections, and flats, it is imperative to adhere to the dimensions specified in the order. The surface quality of the steel product should align with one of the classes enumerated in Table 5 of the standard. For drawn products, the surface must be smooth and devoid of scale. Final heat-treated products must be free from loose surface scale, although they may exhibit surface discoloration or darkening. Notably, surface decarburization is prohibited on turned or ground bars.
The subsequent test must be conducted for Bright Steel Bars.

For bars exceeding 50 mm in diameter or equivalent cross-sectional area, cast identification and the supplier's identification mark/code must be stamped on one end. Bars with a diameter of 50 mm or less, or equivalent cross-sectional area, should be bundled together and secured with appropriate steel strappings at 3-4 points along their length. Each bundle should be equipped with a metal tag securely attached, containing essential details such as the supplier's name, cast heat number, size, mass, order number, etc. Additionally, the Standard Mark (ISI Mark) may be applied to the material.
Manufacturers are required to secure a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards in order to utilize a standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted subsequent to a thorough evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities during an on-site visit to the manufacturing premises by the Bureau.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
