In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into IS 1489 (Part 1), which covers Portland pozzolana cement fly ash-based.
This standard (Part 1) encompasses the production, physical, and chemical specifications of Portland pozzolana cement - fly ash pozzolana. The Indian Standard (Part 1) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards following approval by the Civil Engineering Division Council, upon finalization of the draft by the Cement and Concrete Sectional Committee.
The standard outlines both the chemical and physical prerequisites of the cement, including aspects like fineness, compressive strength, and soundness. Additionally, it delineates the storage conditions for the cement.
Portland Pozzolana Cement, a type of Blended Cement, is crafted by either inter-grinding OPC clinker with gypsum and pozzolanic materials in precise ratios or by separately grinding OPC clinker, gypsum, and pozzolanic materials like fly ash, then thoroughly blending them in specific proportions. According to the standard, the fly ash component must constitute no less than 15% and no more than 35% by mass of Portland pozzolana cement.
Pozzolana, like fly ash, primarily consists of siliceous material. While it possesses minimal or no inherent cementitious properties, when finely divided and in the presence of water, it reacts with calcium hydroxide at ambient temperature to form compounds with cementitious properties. Portland-pozzolana cement must adhere to the chemical and physical specifications outlined in the standard.
The specified tests must be conducted for PPC fly ash-based cement.
Insoluble Residue
Loss of ignition
Fineness test
Soundness test
Setting time
Compressive Strength
Transverse Strength Test
Drying shrinkage
Chemical testing
Fly ash testing
An appropriately maintained laboratory is required for conducting various tests as per the methods specified in the standard.
The manufacturer is responsible for demonstrating compliance with this standard for Portland Pozzolana Cement-fly ash based. Each bag or drum of cement must bear the BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) on its label, provided the material meets specification requirements. Marking procedures must adhere to IS 1489 (Part 1). Additionally, manufacturers need a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted upon successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control measures, testing capabilities, and production processes.
