In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into IS 12640(Part 2):2016/IEC 61009-1:2012 Residual Current Operated Circuit Breakers.
This standard pertains to residual current operated circuit-breakers (RCBOs) featuring integrated overcurrent protection, designed for household and comparable applications. These devices, with rated voltages up to 440 V AC, currents up to 125 A, and short-circuit capacities up to 25000 A, operate at frequencies of 50 Hz or 60 Hz. They may function independently or dependently on line voltage.
This standard is applicable to devices responsible for detecting residual current, comparing it with predetermined thresholds, and interrupting the circuit when the residual current surpasses these thresholds. Additionally, these devices are designed to handle the making, carrying, and breaking of overcurrents under defined conditions.
These devices are engineered to provide safety measures against indirect contact by linking exposed conductive components to appropriate earth electrodes. Furthermore, they offer protection to building wiring systems and similar environments from overcurrents. Additionally, they play a vital role in reducing fire hazards caused by persistent earth fault currents, operating independently of overcurrent protective device activation. RCBOs, featuring a rated residual operating current below 30 mA, can also serve as an additional safety measure in the event of primary electric shock safeguards failure.
RCBOs must be meticulously designed and constructed to ensure user and environmental safety during regular operation. The placement of residual current detection and release mechanisms should be strictly between the RCBO's incoming and outgoing terminals. Any external interventions, except those explicitly intended to adjust the residual operating current settings, are prohibited from altering the RCBO's operational characteristics.
Compliance with standards is verified through specified tests to guarantee adherence. It is imperative that RCBOs remain undamaged to uphold their functionality and safe usage. Moreover, the operating characteristics of RCBOs must align with standard requirements, particularly under residual current or overcurrent conditions.
The specified tests must be conducted for RESIDUAL CURRENT OPERATED CIRCUIT BREAKERS
Tripping Test
Electric Strength Test
Performance of the test device
Clearance & Creepage distance
Trip-free mechanism
Reliability of screws, current-carrying parts, and connections
Reliability of terminals for external conductors
Protection against electric shock and other tests
Marking procedures must comply with IS 12640 (Part 2):2016 standards. Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). This license is granted following a thorough assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities conducted during an on-site visit to the manufacturing premises by the Bureau.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
