This standard outlines the specifications for carbon steel round and flat wire utilized in umbrella ribs. However, it does not cover the wire requirements for hollow U-shaped ribs.

There will be three designated wire grades labeled as Grades 1, 2, and 3.

The steel production should utilize an open hearth, electric, duplex, basic oxygen process, or a combination of these methods. All finished wires must be meticulously drawn to meet the specified dimensions. The wire should be in excellent condition, free from splits, surface flaws, roughness, jagged edges, or any other detrimental surface defects. It should be available in standard sizes. Material supply should adhere to the general requirements outlined in IS 1387:1967.

TESTS

The subsequent test must be conducted for Steel Wire Umbrella Ribs.

• Chemical composition

• Freedom from defects

• Tensile test

• Torsion test

• Reverse bend test

• Straightness test

• Deflection test

PACKING AND MARKING

Packaging and marking procedures must comply with Indian standards. Steel wires intended for umbrella ribs should be supplied in coils and packaged in gunny bags unless stated otherwise by the purchaser. Each coil or bundle of wire must be securely bound and labeled with a tag indicating the size, length, and mass of the wires, along with the manufacturer's name or trademark.

The standard mark (ISI Mark) may be applied to the material. Manufacturers are required to obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards in order to use the standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants licenses following a successful evaluation of manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, and quality control and testing capabilities conducted during a visit to the manufacturing premises.
