Switches compliant with this standard are suitable for operation at ambient temperatures typically not surpassing 35°C. However, this standard does not encompass household and similar installation circuit breakers, appliance switches, or cord switches. It is imperative that switches and boxes are engineered to ensure dependable operation without posing risks to users or the environment under normal usage conditions. Adherence to this standard is typically ascertained through the completion of all specified tests.

Switches with rated voltages ranging from 110 V to 440 V and rated currents ranging from 6A to 63A are commonly favored.

Switches are classified as follows:

• Single pole switches

• Double pole switches

• Three pole switches

• Three pole plus switched neutral switches

• Two-way switches

• Two circuit switches with a common incoming

• Two-way switches with one-off position

• Two ways double pole switches

• Two-way double pole reversing switches

Switches and boxes are required to meet the manufacturer's specifications, with measurement used to verify compliance. It's essential that switches are designed to prevent access to live parts when mounted and wired under normal usage conditions. Additionally, switches must feature either screw clamping terminals or screwless terminals.

Labeling and marking procedures should align with IS 3854:1997 standards. Additionally, for traceability purposes, each switch or its packaging should display the identification mark in the code. Manufacturers are required to secure a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS issues certificates under the product certification program only if the product meets the specifications outlined by BIS.
