In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 3854:1997 for switches.
Switches are addressed in IS 3854:1997. This Indian standard was adopted by BIS subsequent to the approval of the draft finalized by the electrical wiring accessories sectional committee and endorsed by the electrotechnical division council.
This standard is applicable to manually operated general-purpose switches designed for household use, with a rated voltage not exceeding 440 volts and a rated current not exceeding 63 amps. These switches are suitable for operation at room temperature.
This specification extends to include the following switches:
Switches incorporating pilot lights.
Electromagnetic remote control switches
Switches incorporating a time delay device
Combinations of switches and other functions
Electronic switches
Switches compliant with this standard are suitable for operation at ambient temperatures typically not surpassing 35°C. However, this standard does not encompass household and similar installation circuit breakers, appliance switches, or cord switches. It is imperative that switches and boxes are engineered to ensure dependable operation without posing risks to users or the environment under normal usage conditions. Adherence to this standard is typically ascertained through the completion of all specified tests.
Switches with rated voltages ranging from 110 V to 440 V and rated currents ranging from 6A to 63A are commonly favored.
Switches are classified as follows:
Single pole switches
Double pole switches
Three pole switches
Three pole plus switched neutral switches
Two-way switches
Two circuit switches with a common incoming
Two-way switches with one-off position
Two ways double pole switches
Two-way double pole reversing switches
Switches and boxes are required to meet the manufacturer's specifications, with measurement used to verify compliance. It's essential that switches are designed to prevent access to live parts when mounted and wired under normal usage conditions. Additionally, switches must feature either screw clamping terminals or screwless terminals.
Switches must undergo the following tests.
Marking
Protection Against Electric Shock
Electric Strength (Flash Test)
Temperature Rise
Making and breaking capacity
Mechanical Strength
Resistance to heat
Screws, current-carrying, parts, and connections
Creepage distance and clearances
Resistance to rusting and so on
Labeling and marking procedures should align with IS 3854:1997 standards. Additionally, for traceability purposes, each switch or its packaging should display the identification mark in the code. Manufacturers are required to secure a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark). BIS issues certificates under the product certification program only if the product meets the specifications outlined by BIS.
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
