In today's competitive landscape, maintaining market presence without a certified, high-quality product can be challenging. Obtaining a BIS license may also be essential for selling products in the Indian market. To achieve BIS certification and ensure product quality, manufacturers must adhere to the specified Indian standards.
Let's delve deeper into at IS 418:2004 for Tungsten filament lamps.
Tungsten filament lamps generate light by heating the filament to very high temperatures, operating on the principle of incandescence, which refers to light produced by heat.
This standard pertains to tungsten filament incandescent lamps designed for general lighting service (GLS), complying with the safety requirements outlined in Doc ET 23 (5291), and featuring the following characteristics:
Rated wattage of 15 W, 25 W, 40 W, 60 W,100 W, 150 W, and 200 W
Rated voltage 110 V, 230 V, 240 V, and 250 V, including marked voltage range not exceeding ± 2.5% of the mean voltage
Bulbs in A, K, M, or PS shapes
Bulbs with clear frosted or equivalently coated finishes, or white finishes.
Caps B22d or E27
For wattages up to 100 W, lamp shell diameters should vary between 54 and 62 mm.
This standard outlines performance requirements for lamps, along with test methodologies and procedures to ensure compliance. This process can be utilized for certification purposes. Lamps asserting compliance with this standard must adhere to the requirements specified in Doc ET 23 (5291).
Lamps should be engineered to ensure consistent performance under normal and expected usage conditions. Typically, this is achieved by satisfying the requirements outlined in the standard. Lamps are required to undergo testing as per the designated procedure. Additionally, lamps must meet the dimensional specifications provided in the relevant lamp datasheet. For lamps with E27 caps, they must conform to the contact-making gauge specified in datasheet 7006-50. Furthermore, individual lamp lumen maintenance at 75% of rated life must not fall below the minimum value stated in the relevant lamp datasheet.
The following tests must be conducted for tungsten filament incandescent lamps.
Marking
Lamp Dimensions
Wattage
Luminous Flux Initial
Accidentally live parts
Protection against accidental contact in screw lamp holders
Insulation resistance
Interchangeability
The lamp must be labeled with the information specified in the standard, and the ISI certification mark may also be applied to the lamps. All tungsten filament general service electric bulbs (up to 100 W) are subject to the ISI Certification Scheme under IS 418:2004. Without the ISI Mark, this product cannot be exported, imported, or marketed in the Indian consumer market. BIS grants certificates under the product certification program for the use of the standard mark (ISI Mark) for products. After verifying that the product meets BIS's product requirements, the certificate will be granted by BIS. Manufacturers are required to acquire a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards in order to utilize the standard mark (ISI Mark).
Acquiring a BIS license requires a comprehensive review of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control abilities, testing resources, and production procedures. This thorough assessment guarantees that products not only adhere to regulations but also prioritize consumer safety and reliability.
