OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced the "Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023," which mandates compliance with Indian Standard IS 210:2009 (Grey Iron Castings).

This regulation will come into effect six months from its publication in the Official Gazette. The order requires all cast iron products to bear the Standard Mark, which can only be obtained through a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II under the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

It is important to note that this directive does not apply to cast iron products manufactured domestically or those intended for export. Additionally, small enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), will need to comply with the order nine months after its publication. For micro-enterprises, the order will be effective twelve months after the publication date.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been appointed as the certifying and enforcing authority for Cast Iron Products under the new quality control directive.

Any breach of this order will result in penalties in accordance with the provisions specified in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
