OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a new quality control regulation titled the "Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023." This directive will take effect six months after its official publication in the Gazette.

The order mandates that all cast iron products must comply with the Indian Standard 1729:2002 (Cast Iron/Ductile Iron Drainage Pipes and Pipe Fittings for Over-ground Non-pressure Pipeline Socket and Spigot Series). These products must also carry the Standard Mark, obtained via a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under Scheme-1 of Schedule-II, as outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

It is important to note that this order does not apply to cast iron products manufactured domestically or those intended for export. Additionally, for small enterprises, as defined under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), the order will be effective nine months after its publication.

Micro-enterprises will have a longer grace period, with the order becoming applicable twelve months after the publication date.

QCO Order New

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been appointed as the certifying and enforcing authority for Cast Iron Products under the new quality control directive.

Any breach of this order will result in penalties in accordance with the provisions specified in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
