OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has proposed the Chains and Sprockets (Quality Control) Order, 2025 through a draft notification. This order will come into force on the day it is officially published in the Gazette. It covers chains and sprockets that must meet the specifications laid out in Indian Standard IS 14696:2000 — Transmission steel roller chains and chain wheels for oil field use.
All covered items must carry the BIS Standard Mark, issued under a valid licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as per Scheme–I of Schedule–II under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Implementation timeline:

General manufacturers (excluding Micro and Small Enterprises): Must comply within 6 months from the date of publication.
Small Enterprises: Required to comply within 9 months.
Micro Enterprises: Compliance must be ensured within 12 months.

Exclusion for Export:

Products made solely for export are exempt. BIS will serve as the certifying and enforcement authority for these goods, and violations will be penalised under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
