The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued a notification on November 27, 2024, introducing significant updates to the standard IS 302 (Part 1): 2024, aligned with IEC 60335-1: 2020. This revision is crucial for manufacturers and stakeholders involved in household and similar electrical appliances, particularly adapters. 1. Revised Standard: IS 302-1:2008 has been updated to IS 302 (Part 1): 2024/IEC 60335-1: 2020. Notable changes include: New requirements for battery-operated appliances. Revised moisture resistance tests. Clarifications on power input measurement. For detailed updates, refer to the official BIS notification. 2. Implementation Deadline: The current and revised standards will run concurrently until February 23, 2025. After this date, compliance with IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 becomes mandatory, and the old standard will be withdrawn. For Existing Licensees: Immediate Action:Ensure full compliance with the revised standard before February 23, 2025. Testing: Submit updated test reports for lead models tested under IS 302-1:2008 from BIS-recognized labs. Undertaking:Provide an undertaking confirming that all models comply with the revised requirements. Penalties for Non-Compliance:Failure to meet the deadline may result in license cancellation or removal of non-compliant models. For New Applicants: Transition Period:Applications under IS 302-1:2008 will be accepted only until one month before the final deadline, accompanied by an undertaking to adopt the new standard. Post-Deadline Policy:From February 23, 2025, all new licenses will adhere exclusively to IS 302 (Part 1): 2024. Requests for changes to an existing license must also comply with the updated standard by the transition deadline. All manufacturers, licensees, and applicants must act promptly to transition to the updated standard. The deadline is fast approaching, and non-compliance may disrupt certifications and operations.
