OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued an Extension to the quality control order titled the "Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products(Quality Control) Order, 2026."

This Extension order is set to be implemented on 1st December 2026.

The Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2026 (S.O. 1319(E)), issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, mandates strict quality compliance for aluminium products in India. This order supersedes the 2025 regulation and requires all notified aluminium and aluminium alloy products to conform to applicable Indian Standards and bear the BIS Standard Mark. Manufacturers must obtain certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards under Scheme-I of the Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2018, ensuring only certified and high-quality products are sold in the domestic market.

The regulation includes a phased compliance timeline, offering relaxation to MSMEs as defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, while larger enterprises must comply earlier. It also provides exemptions for export-oriented production and limited imports (up to 200 kg annually) for research and development purposes, subject to conditions. Overall, the order aims to enhance product quality, strengthen regulatory enforcement, and align the aluminium sector with national and global standards.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is designated as the authority responsible for certifying and enforcing standards for Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products as specified in this Order.

Any person found contravening the provisions of this order will face penalties under the applicable legislation.
