The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has introduced the Battery Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2025 on February 24, 2025, strengthening battery waste collection, recycling, and disposal regulations in India. This amendment enhances the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, ensuring better compliance and environmental sustainability.
Exemption for Specific Packaging: Packaging materials under Rule 26 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 are exempt from certain obligations.
Mandatory QR Code & Barcode Labeling: Producers must print their EPR registration number on:
Batteries, battery packs, and equipment containing them
Packaging (including bulk packaging not meant for retail)
Product information brochures
Centralized Online Portal: Producers must submit details to the CPCB portal, which will update the registered producers list quarterly.
Exemption for Cadmium & Lead Marking: Batteries with ≤ 0.002% Cadmium or ≤ 0.004% Lead by weight are exempt from Cd/Pb chemical symbol markings.
