Laboratory glassware is vital for scientific research and industrial processes, where precision and safety are paramount. To maintain high standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulates and certifies these products, ensuring they meet national quality benchmarks.
Quality laboratory glassware—beakers, flasks, test tubes, and more—directly impacts experimental accuracy and safety. The key reasons certification matters:
Precision & Accuracy: Ensures reliable results in experiments.
Durability: Resists thermal, chemical, and mechanical stress.
Safety: Reduces contamination risks and prevents accidents.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the BIS Act, 2016, is India’s national standards body. It certifies products to guarantee safety, quality, and reliability. BIS certification reassures consumers and institutions that glassware meets rigorous standards, enhancing credibility and trust.
The Laboratory Glassware (Quality Control) Order, 2023, effective January 1, 2024, mandates BIS certification for specific glassware products. This regulation ensures:
Assured Quality: Compliance with stringent safety and performance standards.
Market Readiness: Legal clearance to sell or distribute products in India.
Brand Credibility: Enhanced reputation through the ISI mark.
Consumer Confidence: Trust in certified products' reliability and safety.

IS 878:2008 outlines the requirements for graduated measuring cylinders in tall (Types 1a and 1b) and squat (Type 2) forms, suitable for laboratory use. Two accuracy classes are defined: Class A for higher precision (Type 1a and 1b) and Class B for general use. The cylinders must be made from glass of hydrolytic class HGB3 or higher, with minimal defects and internal stress. Graduation patterns follow ISO 384:1978, and accuracy testing must comply with ISO 4787.
IS 915:2012 specifies requirements for one-mark volumetric flasks, available in capacities from 1 ml to 5,000 ml. The flasks are classified into Class A (higher accuracy) and Class B (lower accuracy) and must be made from glass of at least HGB3 quality. The graduation line should be permanent, uniform, and no thicker than 0.4 mm, encircling the neck parallel to the base.
IS 1381 (Part 1):2003 defines requirements for conical, flat-bottom, and round-bottom narrow-necked boiling flasks, with capacities ranging from 25 ml to 10,000 ml. The flasks must be made of borosilicate glass, free from visible defects and internal stress to ensure safe and reliable use in laboratories.
IS 1117:2018 specifies single-volume pipettes for laboratory use, with accuracy classes A, AS (higher precision), and B (lower precision). The pipettes, designed to deliver milliliter volumes, must be made from glass meeting HGB3 chemical and thermal resistance standards, with minimal defects and internal stress.
IS 2619:2018 covers glass beakers for lab use, including low-form, thick-walled low-form, and tall-form types, with capacities ranging from 5 ml to 10,000 ml. These beakers must be made of borosilicate glass, free from residual strain and defects that could compromise safety or performance.
The BIS certification process involves thorough evaluation to ensure compliance with Indian standards:
Application Submission: Submit the application and required documents to BIS.
Document Review: BIS verifies the submitted details.
Factory Inspection: On-site assessment of manufacturing processes and quality control systems.
Sample Testing: Glassware undergoes stringent testing in BIS-approved labs
Certification Issuance: Upon successful inspection and testing, BIS grants certification.
Key documents manufacturers must provide
Application form
Manufacturing process and quality control details
Test reports from BIS-accredited labs
Factory layout and equipment specs
Business registration proof
Product specifications
Declaration of conformity to Indian standards
Additional documents may be necessary based on product type and compliance needs.
