OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Textiles is set to implement the "Geo Textiles (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2022," scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2024. This amendment aims to enhance and fortify the current quality control framework for geotextiles, ensuring elevated standards across the industry.

This order pertains specifically to goods or articles categorized as needle-punched non-woven geobags, with the exclusion of those intended for export.

To meet established standards, the specified goods or articles must conform to Indian Standard IS 16653:2017 (Geosynthetics - Specification for needle-punched non-woven geobags used in coastal and waterways protection) and display the Standard Mark. Manufacturers must obtain a license from the Bureau under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

The Bureau is entrusted as both the certifying and enforcing authority for the specified goods or articles, specifically needle-punched non-woven geobags. Failure to comply with this directive may incur penalties as per the stipulations outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).

This regulatory measure aims to maintain the quality and standards of geo textiles, particularly concerning needle-punched non-woven geobags, thereby promoting safety and reliability within the industry.
