The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has introduced a Quality Control Order titled the "Hinges (Quality Control) Order, 2023."

This order will take effect six months after its publication in the Official Gazette.

According to this directive, hinges must comply with the specified Indian Standard 1341:2018 (Steel Butt Hinges) and show the Standard Mark, necessitating a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards under Scheme-1 as outlined in Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations for 2018.

Importantly, this order excludes goods or articles produced domestically for the purpose of export.

Additionally, the timeline for enforcement varies depending on enterprise classification. For micro-enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (27 of 2006), the order will take effect twelve months after publication. For small enterprises, it will apply nine months after publication.
