BIS certification under IS 2047:1992 applies to aluminium alloy hardeners, also known as master alloys, used to modify or improve the properties of aluminium during manufacturing. This standard specifies requirements for composition, quality, and appearance to ensure consistent performance in metallurgical applications.
Products that meet the standard can display the BIS Standard Mark, confirming compliance with Indian quality norms. For manufacturers, it builds credibility and market acceptance, while for users, it ensures reliable alloying materials for producing high-quality aluminium products.
According to IS 2047:1992, aluminium alloy hardeners can be supplied in several physical forms such as bars, ingots, or shots, depending on the manufacturer’s and buyer’s mutual agreement. Each alloy is categorized by a designation code that reflects its base composition and the percentage of the hardening element it contains — for example, alloys with titanium, nickel, silicon, or copper as major constituents. This classification system ensures accurate selection and standardization of alloys used in different metallurgical applications.
Here are the key benefits of getting ISI Mark certification:
Government Quality Assurance: The ISI mark indicates that a product meets the quality standards established by the government, ensuring compliance and reliability.
Mandatory Compliance: It is mandatory for Steel Balls for Rolling Bearings IS 2898 (Part 1) to obtain the ISI Mark. Non-compliance can result in penalties, including material seizure and substantial fines.
Enhanced Market Competitiveness: Achieving certification significantly enhances your product's chances of success in the competitive market.
Consumer Trust: Consumers are more likely to purchase ISI-certified products, as they guarantee safety and quality. This certification helps build trust and confidence among buyers.
Market Benchmarking: Partnering with a respected brand allows you to elevate industry standards and establish a benchmark for your product's market value.

Master alloys are special aluminium-based mixtures that contain elements like titanium, nickel, silicon, copper, etc. They are added in small quantities to aluminium melts to improve properties — such as increasing hardness, refining grain size, or controlling alloy composition.
It depends on regulatory orders. Under draft proposals like the Aluminium Alloy Miscellaneous Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025, it is being proposed that these products come under mandatory quality control. That means in future (or once officially notified), BIS certification will likely be required for manufacture, sale, or import.
If you produce multiple grades in the same group (same kind of hardener element, different concentrations), you may test a representative or higher concentration sample to cover the other grades as per BIS grouping rules.
Once a new regulatory order or amendment comes into effect, you may have to re-certify under the updated requirements old certificates may not be accepted indefinitely.
