OVERVIEW

The Protective Textiles (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2024, issued by the Ministry of Textiles, will become effective on the date it is published in the Official Gazette.

This order aims to establish quality standards for products, particularly protective clothing for firefighters, with the exception of items intended for export.

In accordance with the specified standards, products defined under IS 16890:2018 (Textiles - Protective Clothing for Firefighters – Specification) must meet the corresponding Indian Standard and display the Standard Mark. Manufacturers must obtain a license from the Bureau under Scheme-I of Schedule-II to the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

The Bureau is appointed as the certifying and enforcing authority for the specified products, specifically protective clothing for firefighters.

Any individual found breaching this directive will be subject to penalties as per the provisions outlined in the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 (11 of 2016).

This regulatory framework aims to ensure the safety and quality of protective textiles, specifically firefighter's protective clothing, in the market. It underscores compliance with established standards to benefit consumers and industry stakeholders alike.
